Mental Health Mondays: Suicide Prevention [VIDEO]

There have been a lot of great events and organizations I‘ve been able to work with over my career thus far. One of my favorites is the AFSP. If you’re not up on your acronyms, no worries, it stands for, The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. They have done and continue to do amazing work in our country and state to lower the stigma that surrounds suicide and provide resources for people who are struggling or may struggle.

Over the weekend, we were at UIS by the Student Union gathering for the Out OF the Darkness Walk. This walk remembers those who we have lost by suicide over the years and celebrates the progress we are making though continued hard work and determination.  Things like 988. 988 is a number anyone can call who is struggling or dealing with someone who struggles. This used to be a longer 800 number but now with its simplification, has already upped the numbers for the service.

Here at WNNS we will also be putting together another SafeTALK training for those who are interested. Safe talk is a training that gives you tools to talk to someone who is struggling with suicide and also the resources to give them for continued support. We want as many people in our community to be SafeTALK certified. For more information on that, please subscribe to our WNNS newsletter at wnns.com.

I hope you can get involved. If time doesn’t allow and you could donate financially, the AFSP has donation buttons on their website and Facebook. Also, please listen to my Podcast the Noblest Motive. Our latest episode is on Mental Health, and we give some great local resources for people who need help. We also discuss our own mental health journeys. See episode below:
