Despite preventive measures put in place, it was still one of the most violent Memorial Day weekends in Chicago in years.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that 11 people were fatally shot and more than 50 others wounded in incidents across Chicago from 6pm Friday through midnight Monday night. That’s the most fatalities for a Memorial Day weekend in Chicago since 2015.
The state had assigned 30 “peacekeepers” to Chicago in an effort to defuse and de-escalate dangerous situations before they erupted in gunfire.
