A Sangamon County grand jury has indicted an Auburn man on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the crash that killed a North Carolina woman on Interstate 55 last week.

44-year-old Shane Jason Woods had been arrested on an initial charge of reckless homicide. But in a petition to have Woods held without bond, State’s Attorney Dan Wright says Woods made statements before and after the crash that established his intent to cause a crash, knowing that it could lead to great bodily injury or death.

Woods… who is already facing up to eight years in federal prison for his role in the 2021 U.S. Capitol insurrection… is also charged with multiple counts of aggravated DUI and a count of aggravated fleeing and eluding a peace officer for his actions just prior to the crash.
