The Governor has announced a plan to help bring grocery stores to so-called food desert areas where residents have to travel miles to reach a grocery store.

The $20 million plan, the Illinois Grocery Initiative, would address food deserts and help prevent stores from closing across Illinois.

It’s the first of its kind in Illinois, and eligible applicants include local communities and independent grocers.

The stores must also take SNAP and WIC payments. Pritzker has already called for the elimination of the state’s grocery tax to help families afford groceries.
