Illinois State Sen. Mike Simmons is pushing a permanent state-level child tax
credit bill he estimates could positively impact the neighborhoods of half of all
the state’s children.

First introduced by Simmons last year, the bill is still up for consideration, with the veteran lawmaker adding he plans to again raise the
issue during the upcoming budget negotiations in Springfield.

As it is, the bill seeks to award parents a credit of up to $700 per child.

Simmons said at least 15 other states have already enacted similar legislation; the measure remains in committee, but has a number of Democratic sponsors.
