UPDATED: Police officer shot on Toronto Road in Springfield late Tuesday night, suspect later taken into custody

UPDATE: At approximately 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 25, a suspect was taken into custody for the shooting of a police officer in the leg area on Tuesday night; it was found that he was wanted for a different incident in Chicago as well.

ORIGINAL: A Springfield police officer was shot late Tuesday night in the capital city of Illinois, with local agencies searching the immediate area in the aftermath.

At approximately 10:44 p.m. on October 24, the Springfield Police Department responded to the 1600 Block of Toronto Road for a report of an officer shot. 

Upon arriving at the scene, officers from multiple jurisdictions verified that an officer from a different department had been shot during a traffic stop.

Officers on the scene of the incident assisted in providing assistance until medical arrived and transported the officer to a local hospital. 

SPD notes that it believes that the suspect is in the area where the shooting occurred. 

Hence, multiple law enforcement jurisdictions are searching the area north of Toronto Rd, South of Hazel Dell, west of 11th Street, and east of I-55; residents in the area are asked to shelter in place at this time.
