Members of Illinois House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch’s office staff are calling on the lawmaker to recognize the Illinois Legislative Staff Association as their union representative.

They complain that Welch has so far been unwilling to discuss the issue with the group, and that real wages for staffers have fallen more than 10% in the past decade while the workload has increased.

The Illinois Labor Relations Board denied union certification in March on the grounds that state law prohibits the board from ruling on matters involving General Assembly employees.
