The Illinois Department of Transportation recently announced that resurfacing work involving Interstate 55, as well as the Sangamon Avenue and Illinois 54 interchange – exits 100A-B – in Springfield is set to commence this Thursday, September 7.

Work will be occurring at night between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. and will require lane closures; at least one lane in each direction is slated to remain open, however.

All lanes of I-55 will be open during the day and on the weekend, but daytime lane closures should be expected on Sangamon Avenue and Illinois 54.

Benefits from the project include a new driving surface and extending the life expectancy of the pavement; the project should be completed by late November.

The IDOT urges drivers to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices, and be alert for workers and equipment.
