A public hearing will be held in June to discuss plans for some of the most sweeping improvements to Interstates 55 and 72 around Springfield in decades.

The proposed $800 million project would expand I-55 to three lanes in each direction from Williamsville south to the I-55/72 split, with the additional lanes continuing west on I-72 to Veterans Parkway.

The work would require major reconstructions of the Springfield interchanges from Sangamon Avenue to South Sixth Street. Planning on the project began in 2011, but lack of funding stalled the work until the Rebuild Illinois plan was approved in 2019.

Work on the first phase of the project from Williamsville to Sangamon Avenue is expected to begin next year. The public hearing will be held Tuesday, June 13, from 4 to 7 pm at the Northfield Inn and Suites in Springfield.
