An 84-year-old woman escaped serious injury, but her home was badly damaged in a weekend fire in Springfield.
Fire Chief Ed Canny, Jr. says heavy flame was showing from the front of the home on North 7th Street when crews arrived Sunday morning.
The elderly woman who lives there was able to get out of the house, reportedly with assistance from neighbors and a Springfield police officer who arrived on the scene.
Despite indications of minor smoke inhalation, the woman declined medical treatment or transport. The home, however, is expected to be a total loss, and the cause or causes of the fire remains under investigation.
