Services were canceled Sunday at a Springfield church after a small fire broke out in the building Saturday night.

More than 80 people were attending an event at the Abraham Lincoln Unitarian Universalist Congregation church Saturday night when smoke from the fire was discovered.

The building was evacuated, and no one was injured. The fire may have begun in a trashcan in a hallway closet, and the flames were contained there, but there was smoke damage elsewhere in the building.

The church hopes to reopen in time for services next weekend; the state fire marshal’s office is investigating.
