The work that will close part of East Washington Street downtown this week includes demolition of one of the two buildings at the heart of a controversial recent proposal.

Even though Mayor Jim Langfelder has not yet signed an ordinance allowing up to $600,000 in downtown TIF district funds to be used for demolition costs, Horace Mann has moved ahead with tearing down a structure it owns at 622 East Washington.

That structure is not seen as “contributing” to the downtown historic district. Demolition of an adjacent building remains on hold for now.

Demolition and sewer work is closing down Washington between 6th and 7th through at least Friday.
