Some conservative Republican lawmakers are criticizing legislation that they say would make Illinois a haven for same-sex couples from other states who may come here to get married if marriage equality is overturned in their own state.

Democratic Representative Kelly Cassidy says her bill repeals archaic sections of Illinois law and protects marriage rights even if the U.S. Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage is someday overturned.

Members of the conservative Freedom Caucus say Illinois should not do “an end run” around the laws of other states.

The bill passed the Illinois House and is now headed to the Senate.
