A group representing Illinois hotels is seeking approval of measures that the group says will protect the hotel industry and the people who work in it.

The Illinois Hotel and Lodging Association is asking lawmakers to approve a bill that would put short-term rentals, like AirBnB properties, on the same footing as hotels, by requiring home rentals to collect and remit the same six-percent lodging tax that hotels are required to charge.

The group also seeks passage of a law that explicitly states that hotels have the right to refuse service to people who are verbally abusive to hotel employees.

The association says that right is not expressly stated in current law, leaving hotels and workers potentially liable if they refuse service on those grounds.
