New federal funding means low-emissions buses will account for more than half of the Sangamon Mass Transit District fleet.

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin and Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski stopped at SMTD’s storage garage in Springfield to discuss the $5.9 million allocation for the purchase of compressed natural gas and diesel-hybrid buses. Durbin says it’s part of a continuing trend toward greener energy sources and reducing the impact of pollution on the climate.

SMTD says it will evaluate the performance of the diesel-hybrid vehicles before determining whether to seek more of them or look at other low-emissions buses, like those powered by hydrogen fuel cells.
