State officials are monitoring an apparent outbreak of illness that has left hundreds of migratory birds dead in recent days.

More than 300 dead waterbirds, mainly snow geese, have been discovered at locations in Southern Illinois, including Rend Lake, Carlyle Lake, and Pyramid State Recreation Area. Illinois conservation officials believe it’s the result of an avian influenza outbreak.

They are reminding hunters that any birds they kill must be thoroughly cooked to 165 degrees… and to avoid handling sick or dead waterfowl in the field where possible. The USDA website has more information on appropriate precautions against avian influenza.
