Illinois lawmakers will return to Springfield after Thanksgiving to resume work on the fall veto session… but it’s looking less likely that there will be major changes to a big law taking effect January 1st.

Although the SAFE-T Act and its provisions ending cash bail next year were a major issue in the fall campaign, the big wins for Democrats means that they believe voters support the new law and do not want to see it repealed or drastically scaled back. One leading Democratic lawmaker tells Capitol News Illinois that “technical” changes to clarify parts of the law are possible, but it’s still unclear exactly what those changes might look like.

Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers… many of whom have called for repeal of the law… say they’re being shut out of the negotiations.
