Decatur is getting an upgraded manufacturing plant to make a key component for electric vehicles.

With demand growing for electric cars and trucks, the project to build cooling devices for EVs will add 50 jobs to a facility that already employs more than 100 people making compressors for conventional vehicles. T/CCI in Decatur will invest more than $20 million to convert a former Borg-Warner plant to make the EV compressors.

Company officials say they could have located the plant anywhere, but decided to locate in Decatur because of state incentives, including payroll tax credits and assistance with the establishment of a climate innovation center at Decatur’s Richland Community College.
