Sangamon County has its first probable case of monkeypox.

County health officials say an adult male went to a local health care provider with symptoms of the illness, and initial testing indicated that it was in fact caused by the contagious monkeypox virus. The county is still awaiting a final result from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

State and local officials are working to identify anyone who may have had close contact with the infected individual. The virus is generally spread through close contact with monkeypox sores or bodily fluids from someone who’s infected, or contact with their clothing, or prolonged exposure to respiratory droplets from someone with the virus. The health department says there is a low risk of wide community spread of the virus, and say they have not yet identified any other suspected cases.
